What’s a Pikake?

“Pikake” is the Hawaiianized word for “peacock,” and it is also the name commonly used for the Chinese jasmine flower. The flower was brought to HawaiÊ»i in the 1880s and grew abundantly around Princess Victoria Kaiulani’s estate, Ê»Ainahau.  It’s said that she named the flower pikake because her peacocks often wandered through the jasmine plants.

Delicate and fragrant, Pikake—the flower of romance—honors Kaiulani, the beloved last princess of HawaiÊ»i. To this day, Pikake leis are worn throughout the islands for special occasions and celebrations.
